Welcome!
Cassandra Barker, CPM, CDEM
Midwife & Founder of Emerald Midwifery
Cassandra found her calling to midwifery through her own journey into motherhood. First, her relentless curiosity and fascination with the human body took her to the field of exercise science, where she fell in love with physiology. The education she was given during her program set the stage to fully embrace her first pregnancy with a desire to learn how to have a healthy, enriching experience through nutrition and positive lifestyle practices. After feeling unsupported in early prenatal OB care, she discovered midwifery and out-of-hospital birth through a friend. The midwifery model of care was an instant match. Her and her husband together welcomed their first daughter at home supported by midwives—an experience that deeply shaped her passion for compassionate, family-centered care. It was during her second pregnancy in early 2018 that she was invited to apprentice and train with her midwives by attending home births, and she hasn’t left home birth ever since! Cassandra takes pride in being trained as a traditional midwife, and honors holistic health. Her duty as a midwife is to educate, inspire, and love mothers well, so that they can love their babies well… creating ripples in the community for generations to come.
Now a NARM-certified Certified Professional Midwife, Cassandra had attended over 150 births when she completed her training as a midwife in 2023. She is deeply devoted to supporting families with respect, trust, and individualized care, and to expanding access to midwifery and birth choices in Indiana. A homeschooling mother of two and wife, Cassandra feels honored to walk alongside families during one of life’s most powerful and transformative moments, and warmly welcomes connection with those seeking thoughtful, heart-centered care.
Lacey Powell, CPM, CDEM
Midwife
Lacey is a mom of 4 children, all born naturally in the hospital, a birth center, and the last 2 at home. She and her husband reside in Avon and are actively looking for land to build their dream homestead. Her desire to work in birth started as a child, being fascinated by the births of her farm animals, and was confirmed when she attended her first human homebirth at just 15 years old. Lacey has been serving women in childbirth for over 23 years now, starting as a doula, progressing to a homebirth birth assistant, and eventually pursuing midwifery and graduating with a degree in the Science of Midwifery from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in December 2025. She is a childbirth and birth assistant educator with a love for teaching.
Calm and supportive in nature, Lacey prides herself on helping mothers follow their intuition while listening to their bodies during the birthing process. She follows her roots in traditional midwifery to create a safe environment where mothers can let their births unfold as naturally and intervention-free as possible. She believes that pregnancy and childbirth are natural life occurrences during which our ancestral wisdom guides us through the divinely designed processes. Lacey firmly believes that the way women and babies are cared for during the childbearing year leaves a lasting impact on the generations that follow. Her own practice, Yarrow Moon Midwifery, is the culmination of heart work and tangible knowledge that Lacey has been building over the past two decades to help women and their families feel empowered and safe in their birth choices. She enjoys working on a team with calm and capable members whose philosophies surrounding birth keep the safety and autonomy of the mother (and baby) at the forefront of their care. She and Cassandra have worked together since late 2021 and enjoy each other quite a lot, probably a little too much.

Mindy Ulz, RN
Birth Assistant
Mindy is a mother to four, marathon runner, and has worked as a pediatric nurse at Riley Hospital for Children since 2020. Her experience in birth started as a doula, then traditional midwife and has since served women in all settings throughout the years – hospital, birth center, and home. Mindy believes that pregnancy and birth are normal physiological processes, and values being a part of a team that shares that same belief, and centers the woman and family in care. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, rock climbing, and hiking with her family. Mindy supports Emerald part-time by supporting at births and completing in-home postpartum visits for mothers and their babies.
After attending my first birth as a doula, my heart has always been in women’s health, pregnancy, and birth. It is such an honor to assist women and parents-to-be during this transformative time. I am passionate about empowering pregnant and birthing people through informed choice and evidence based care, which is integral to the care provided at Emerald Midwifery.
